Manhattan Beach: How I Made It #8
Paid Subscriber special
This is another in our series for paid subscribers on how we made the latest episode of Photowalks.
Our latest takes place in the town I’ve been living in since 1996, Manhattan Beach. So we can scratch deep research off the list for getting this show made.
We know that most of the action will be downtown, by the beach, because even if Manhattan Beach has some nice places in other parts of town, people want to see the beach period.
In putting the show together, I started by putting in a call to Joe Franklin, the current mayor and a flamboyant sort who drives around town in a beautiful 1955 blue Thunderbird. I wanted to open the show with the two of us driving down to the beach.
So I went over to his house the night before the shoot and did a walk through to see how I could attach a GoPro and Insta360 camera to his car, using a variety of clamps and poles that I own. We would get audio from the GoPro, using one of the older “Mods” which let you plug in a mic, in this case my Rode Wireless Micros.
Everything worked for the trial.

Then the next morning, when I returned to Joe’s home, the sun was shining brightly. I snapped the GoPro into position on his car, and turned it on. Anyone with a GoPro knows what happened next.
