WATCH: Route 66, Part III: Oklahoma & Texas
Neon, Deco, the Blue Whale, buried Cadillacs and those abandoned homes in Luther
New Episode Alert: The latest installment of Photowalks: Route 66 is live and ready for your video enjoyment. This week we continue down the Mother Road, celebrating it’s Centennial birthday in 2026, as we cross into Oklahoma and Texas.
Oklahoma calls itself the Capital of Route 66, since the father of the highway was from Tulsa, but beyond that, there’s also some truly amazing art deco and neon in Tulsa, world-class museums devoted to Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, a crazy bowling alley unlike any you’ve ever seen, some great backroads and we haven’t even talked Texas yet.
You’ve got the ten Cadillacs buried on the side of the road in Amarillo, the “free” 72 ounce steak if you could eat it in an hour, the art deco neon masterpiece U-Drop Inn Cafe in Shamrock and the half-way point in Adrian.
Best of all, I met up with and/or made so many new friends in Oklahoma, more than any other state, including Bill, Christine, Rhys, Kat, Becky, Brian and Mike. And let’s not forget the sisters from the U-Drop.

At this point in the journey, we’re halfway home, and will have two more episodes for you in the coming weeks: New Mexico, and then Arizona with a touch of California, where we slide to the finish line. I hope you’ll stay tuned for those.
