Ok, I have to figure this out...but it feels overwhelming to try and setup something new and download everything from OneDrive to put it somewhere else. I'm quite sure just having it on OneDrive is not sufficient and anyway it's terrible to try and search it (read - SO SLOW). I only have < 1 TB of data (all my files, photos and videos - really! Even after 10 years of daily photographs. But that's also because I don't keep the raw files, I only keep the exported jpgs. (I know, I know, I may regret it - but then again, how often do we really go back to that stuff?)
Figuring out the steps to do this in feels like such an overwhelming task.
Keep everything on OneDrive. Just have two drives at home as well please. Buy two 4 TB drives for under $100 each and you're set. https://amzn.to/3IgBsiG
The thing is, it's all on OneDrive but not on any local drives (not fully anyway) because my local drives are only 500GB. So I'm not even sure how to download it all once - let alone how to do it in an ongoing way? I take photos every day -I'm not sure how to effectively back them up and I don't want to have to copy them to multiple places each time?
You can use a regular drive on an iPad with the USB Card Reader accessory. https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/external-storage-devices-ipad75b7b23f/ipados That 2 TB $149 SSD drive I mentioned would be perfect for you. For the adapter, if you have a recent iPad with USB-C (or 3) you'll want this model: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter
Jeff thanks so much for your reply. Cheers, Barb
You're welcome Roy! Keep the questions coming! Great inspiration for story topics.
Thanks Jeff for this information on backup hard drives. Do you have any advice, information regarding external storage for IPads? Thanks. Barb
Thank you so very much for providing a detailed explanation and recommendations for backup hard drives.

Does this help. You really need larger hard drives. If not today, in the coming months. Your collection will only grow substantially. Please buy yourself a 4 TB minimum. Does this Microsoft help page help? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/download-files-and-folders-from-onedrive-or-sharepoint-5c7397b7-19c7-4893-84fe-d02e8fa5df05
Thanks. I will figure it out surely...perhaps slowly.
Search is the bane of my existence, especially with so much data spread across multiple drives!
